In June, the Centre announced a ‘bailout package’ of Rs 8,000 crore for the industry. A month earlier, it had announced a Rs 1,540 crore subsidy to allow millers to clear some dues. In March, it had waived 20% customs duty on sugar to clear surplus stock before the next season.
